V/Adj/이다,아니다 + -었었- This indicates a past event that is no longer connected to the present. It is similar to the regular past tense, but places more emphasis on the event being in the more distant past, or on the fact that the situation has completely ended or is now different from the present.
옛날에는 CD로 음악을 들었었어요.
In the past, we used to listen to music on CDs.
작년에도 날씬했지만, 대학생 때는 더 날씬했었어요.
I was slim last year too, but I was even slimmer when I was in college.
컴퓨터가 고장났었어요.
The computer was broken.
→ This implies that it is no longer broken now (maybe it has been fixed or discarded). In contrast, “컴퓨터가 고장 났어요” means that it is broken now.
