-는지

V/Adj/이다,아니다 + 는/ㄴ/은지 It is used to embed a sentence inside another sentence. This allows you to make an indirect question instead of asking it directly.

(It looks similar to ‘-ㄴ/은 지’ (time expression), yet has a completely different meaning and slightly different conjugation.)

1. When there is no questioning word. (translated as 'if' or 'whether')

저는 수지 씨가 영화를 좋아하는지 모르겠어요.

I don't know if Suzy likes movies.

오늘 수업이 있는지 알고 싶어요.

I want to know if there is a class today.

켈리 씨도 그거 아는지 확인해보세요.

Please check if Kelly knows about that too.

2. When there is a questioning word.

저는 수지 씨가 어떤 영화를 좋아하는지 모르겠어요.

I don't know what kind of movies Suzy likes.

지금 몇 시인지 알아요?

Do you know what time it is now?

학교에서 어떻게 수채화를 그리는지 배웠어요.

I learned how to paint watercolors at school.

그 가게가 어디에 있는지 검색해봤어요.

I searched for where that store is located.

• Verb, -었-, -겠-, 있다/없다

Root + 는지

ex. 가는지, 먹는지, 듣는지, 만들다 →만드는지, 있는지, 없는지(재미있는지, 맛없는지) 갔는지, 가겠는지, 예뻤는지, 예쁘겠는지

• Adjective, 이다/아니다

받침 X, ㄹ받침	ㄴ지	ex. 큰지, 싼지, 비싼지, 멀다 → 먼지, N+인지/아닌지
받침 O	은지	ex. 작은지, 좋은지
	Exeption rule	ex. 더운지, 추운지

• Tense: There are no strict tense restrictions. It depends on what you intend to express.
