V + 는, Adj + ㄴ/은 This makes a verb and an adjective into a noun modifier, and that is occurring in the present.

1. Adjective

예쁘다 → 예쁜 여자친구 → 태형 씨는 [ 예쁜 여자친구 ]가 있어요.

to be pretty pretty girlfriend Taehyung has a pretty girlfriend.

무겁다 → 무거운 가방 → [ 무거운 가방 ]은 저한테 주세요.

to be heavy heavy bag Please give me heavy bags.

빨갛다 → 빨간 구두 → 수지 씨는 [ 빨간 구두 ]를 신었어요.

to be red red shoes Suzy wears red shoes.

2. Verb

좋아하다 → 좋아하는 음식 → [ 좋아하는 음식 ]이 뭐예요?

to like food that you like What is the food you like?(What food do you like?)

먹다 → 케이크 먹는 사람 → [ 케이크 먹는 사람 ]이 제 언니예요.

to eat person who is eating cake The person eating cake is my sister.

있다 → 중국에 있는 아빠 → 저는 [ 중국에 있는 아빠 ]가 보고 싶어요.

to be there Dad who is in the China I miss my dad who is in the China.

Root+는

ex. 가는, 먹는, 듣는, 만들다→ 만드는, 있는/없는(재미있는, 맛없는)

있다 and 없다 take '-는'. Even though 재미있다(fun), 재미없다(not fun), 맛있다(delicious), and 맛없다(not tasty) are adjectives, we say, ‘재미있는, 재미없는, 맛있는, 맛없는’.

• Adjective, 이다/아니다

받침 X, ㄹ받침	ㄴ	ex. 큰, 싼, 비싼, 멀다 → 먼, N+인/아닌
받침 O	은	ex. 작은, 좋은

V + 는 것(거) Adj + ㄴ,은 것(거) This makes a clause work as a noun in the sentence.

1. indicating a thing. (item, object, or something)

지금 듣는 것은 BTS 노래예요.

What I’m listening to is BTS song.

비싼 거 샀어요.

I bought something expensive.

2. indicating the action or state itself.

저는 음악 듣는 거를 좋아해요.

I like listening to music.

한국어 공부하는 것이 힘들어요.

It’s hard to study Korean.

• It can be shorten with markers; 것은→건, 것이→게, 것을 →걸

공부하는 것이 힘들어요.

= 공부하는 게 힘들어요.

가장 좋아하는 것은 불고기예요.

= 가장 좋아하는 건 불고기예요.

저는 음악 듣는 것을 좋아해요.

= 저는 음악 듣는 걸 좋아해요.

• -는 곳 is also used a lot, meaning the place.

저는 먼 곳에서 살아요.

I live in a distant place.

추운 곳에는 나무가 없어요.

There are no trees in cold places.
