-게 되다

V/Adj + 게 되다 (-게(certain state) + 되다(to become)) This indicates the result, situation, or state that has changed due to external influence or one’s intention. (It becomes to, get to, happened to ~) '–게' indicates how or to what degree an action is performed. When combined with 되다(to become), it creates a construction that expresses becoming a certain state.

이 과자 너무 맛있어서 자꾸 먹게 돼요.

These snacks are so delicious that I end up eating them again and again.

이제 한국 노래 가사를 잘 따라 부르게 되었어요.

Now, I’ve become able to sing along well to Korean song lyrics.

한국어 공부를 많이 해서, 드라마를 자막 없이 보게 됐어요.

Because I studied Korean a lot, I’ve become able to watch dramas without subtitles.

• The verb 되다 can be conjugated as either -돼요 or -되어요 in its polite -요 form.

먹게 돼요 = 먹게 되어요

먹게 됐어요 = 먹게 되었어요

• -어지다 VS -게 되다

‘-어지다’ and ‘-게 되다’ both describe change. ‘-어지다’ means the change occurs naturally. On the other hand, ‘-게 되다’ shows that the change happens because of external circumstances or someone’s intention.

This is a passive. There is no object. 휴대폰 어플이 만들어졌어요. subject A mobile phone app was made.	This is not a passive. It can have an object. (제가) 휴대폰 어플을 만들게 됐어요. object I ended up making a mobile phone app.
