기도하다 | to pray |
나라 | country |
희생 | sacrifice |
배우다 | to learn |
N + 을/를 위해 V+ 기 위해 It means ‘for(the sake of~)’. While ‘for’ in English has a wide range of meanings, ‘위해’ in Korean is used only to indicate benefit for a particular person or thing. You can use either ‘~위해’ or ‘~위해서’. It's not a marker, still it’s often used after a noun, functioning like a marker.
엄마를 위해서 파티를 열 거예요.
I will hold a party for my mom.
친구를 위해 기도해요.
I pray for my friend.
건강을 위해서 운동을 해요.
I exercise for my health.
- When it's followed by a noun, '~위한' is used.
나라를 위한 희생을 잊지 맙시다.
Let's not forget the sacrifice for our country.
- You can use it with verbs in the form of 'verb root+기 위해(서)'. In this case, it expresses purpose more explicitly and can be translated as “in order to ~.”
엄마 생신을 축하하기 위해서 파티를 열 거예요.
I will hold a party to celebrate my mom’s birthday.
컴퓨터를 배우기 위해서 학원에 다녀요.
I go to an academy in order to learn computer.
(The meaning is similar to the connective ending '으려고', but '-기 위해서' expresses purpose more strongly, while '-으려고' simply indicates intention.)
