-어 주다

V+ 아/어 주다 When ‘주다’ is used alone, it means ‘to give’. Combined with other verbs, it indicates performing that action for someone else.

엄마가 김밥을 만들어 줬어요.

Mom made kimbap (for me).

창문을 닫아 줄까요?

Shall I close the window (for you)?

말해 주세요.

Please tell me.

('-으세요' is polite, but can sound somewhat forceful. Using '-어 주세요' creates a gentler request by implying "please do this action for my benefit.")

문을 열어 주세요.

Please open the door (for me).

• When performing an action for an elderly person, '-어 드리다' is used instead. '드리다' is the honorific form of '주다'.

친구한테 케이크를 만들어 줬어요. → 할머니께 케이크를 만들어 드렸어요.

I made a cake for my friend. → I made a cake for grandmother.

• You can regard this form(‘root + 어 주다’) as a single word.
