Is 필요하다 a Verb or an Adjective? (Most Korean Learners Get This Wrong!)
Everyone! Is 가다 (to go) a verb or an adjective?
What about 작다 (to be small)?
And how about 필요하다? Is it a verb... or an adjective?

In Korean, it's actually very important to know whether a predicate is a verb or an adjective.
Why?
Because many grammar rules change depending on which one it is.
One of the most common examples is turning a verb or adjective into a noun modifier.
Verbs
- 가다 → 가는
- 먹다 → 먹는
- 하다 → 하는
Adjectives
- 예쁘다 → 예쁜
- 작다 → 작은
- 크다 → 큰
As you can see, verbs usually take -는, while adjectives usually take -ㄴ/은.
That's why it's a good idea to learn whether a new predicate is a verb or an adjective when you study vocabulary.
Fortunately, most of the time it's pretty easy! Just by looking at the meaning, you can usually tell.
Verbs : Words that describe actions or movements.
Adjectives : Words that describe states, qualities, or characteristics.
But...
There are a few words that confuse almost every Korean learner.
One of the biggest ones is 필요하다.
Is 필요하다 a verb?
The answer is... No! It's an adjective!
Many learners memorize 필요하다 as "to need", so they naturally assume it's a verb. However, the dictionary defines 필요하다 as:
To be necessary.
Since it describes a state, not an action, it's classified as an adjective. That's why we say:
✅ 필요한 물건 (a necessary item)
✅ 필요한 사람 (a necessary person)
✅ 필요한 것 (something necessary)
✅ 필요한 이유 (a reason it’s necessary)

Another tricky one: 그립다
Here's another word that confuses many learners.
Because 그립다 is often translated as "to miss", many people think it's a verb. But it's actually an adjective! The dictionary definition is:
To be in a state of longing for someone or something.
Again, this describes a feeling or state, not an action. So we say:
✅ 그리운 사람 (someone I/you miss)
✅ 그리운 기억 (a cherished memory)
✅ 그리운 시간 (the good old days)
Not 그립는 ❌
